Causes & Solutions for Overheating Gearboxes

Causes & Solutions for Overheating Gearboxes

Gearbox overheating is generally caused by four core factors: lubrication failure, mechanical malfunctions, insufficient heat dissipation and abnormal load. Normally, the temperature rise of a gearbox shall not exceed 40℃ relative to the ambient temperature. Excessively high temperature will accelerate lubricant deterioration, and even lead to gear scuffing or bearing burnout. Below is a systematic troubleshooting guide:

1. Lubrication Failures (Most Common Cause)

  • Improper oil level: Add oil to the marked scale if the level is too low; drain excess oil for overfilled gearboxes.
  • Degraded lubricant: Replace black, turbid oil and thoroughly clean the oil tank.
  • Mismatched oil viscosity: Use low-viscosity oil for high-speed light-load working conditions, high-viscosity oil for heavy loads, and fully synthetic oil for high-temperature environments.
  • Loss of grease lubrication: Adopt anti-splash grease for high-speed operation; fill only 1/3 to 1/2 of the bearing cavity with grease.

2. Mechanical Faults

  • Pitting or broken gear teeth: Replace damaged gears and conduct profile modification; ensure the gear contact area reaches more than 80%.
  • Stuck or noisy bearings: Install new bearings and adjust preload force properly.
  • Misaligned installation: Use a laser alignment instrument to limit axis deviation within 0.05mm per meter.
  • Seal leakage: Replace skeleton oil seals to prevent dust and impurities from entering the box.

3. Inadequate Heat Dissipation

  • Remove dust and dirt accumulated on the gearbox housing regularly.
  • Equip auxiliary cooling devices such as exhaust fans or oil-water coolers.
  • Select gearboxes with cooling fins on the casing; keep the unit away from external heat sources.

4. Abnormal Operating Load

  • Monitor motor operating current continuously. Reduce load when overload occurs, or replace with a higher-torque gearbox.
  • Install torque-limiting couplings to protect the transmission system from overload damage.

Emergency & Long-term Maintenance Suggestions

Emergency Treatment

Shut down the equipment immediately for cooling. First inspect the oil level, oil quality and heat dissipation structure. If the problem persists, rotate the gearbox manually to check for abnormal noises. Severe overheating requires professional disassembly and maintenance.

Long-term Preventive Maintenance

  1. Install temperature sensors to realize real-time overheating early warning.
  2. Regularly test the acid value and water content of lubricating oil to predict potential faults in advance.
