Material of chain

There are many kinds of chain materials, mainly carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and engineering plastics, different materials manufacturing chains have different characteristics.

carbon steel

Material of chain

Carbon steel is mainly composed of iron and carbon, and the carbon content is generally between 0.0218% and 2.11%. Carbon is the main element that determines the performance of carbon steel. With increasing carbon content, the steel hardness and strength increase, but the plasticity and toughness decrease.

According to the carbon content classification, there are low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and high carbon steel points.

Low carbon steel: carbon content is generally less than 0.25%, has good plasticity and toughness, easy to process and weld, often used in the manufacturing of sheet, steel wire, steel pipe, etc., is also a more common manufacturing chain materials.

Medium carbon steel: carbon content between 0.25% to 0.60%, has a high strength and hardness, but also has a certain plasticity and toughness, commonly used in the manufacture of gears, shafts, bolts and other mechanical parts.

High carbon steel: carbon content is greater than 0.60%, has a high strength and hardness, but plasticity and toughness is poor, commonly used in the manufacturing of tools, molds, springs and so on.

High strength:

Alloy steel chains are stronger than carbon steel to withstand larger loads.

Good toughness:

Alloy steel chain has good toughness and can not be easy to fracture when impacted and vibration.

Corrosion resistance:

Some alloy steel chains have good corrosion resistance and can be used in a wet, corrosive environment.

 

stainless steel

Although stainless steel can also be considered as a kind of alloy steel to some extent, stainless steel cannot be directly classified in the alloy steel category because of the differences in the composition, performance characteristics and applicable occasions.

Stainless steel in the steel added chromium, nickel and other elements, so that it has good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, so the stainless steel as the material of the chain in some occasions with corrosion environment is widely used.

Engineering plastics are a kind of high-performance polymer materials that can be used as structural materials, which can withstand mechanical stress in a wide temperature range, and are used in more harsh chemical and physical environments.

At present, several engineering plastics mainly used on the market are as follows:

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE):

This is a kind of engineering plastic with very good comprehensive performance, with a very high molecular weight (usually more than 1.5 million), almost concentrated the advantages of all kinds of plastics. Often used as a chain guide in the chain, it can reduce the friction of the chain, reduce noise and enhance the service life of the chain.

Nylon (polyamide, PA):

With high strength, high toughness, good wear resistance, self-lubrication and other characteristics. Its mechanical strength is high, can withstand a certain load, and has a good wear resistance in the friction environment.

PFE (PTFE):

Also known as "plastic king", has extremely excellent high and low temperature resistance, can reach-180℃ to 260℃; it is one of the most corrosion resistant materials in the world, can resist any organic solvent. However, the material is relatively soft, not easy to process, easy to deform, unable to process high-precision parts. In the chain, PTFE is usually used as a special coating material or additive.

polyurethane (PU):

With good oil resistance, toughness, wear resistance and aging resistance.

In the chain, polyurethane can be used to manufacture the cushion pads, seals and other parts of the chain, which can play the role of shock absorption, noise reduction and sealing, and improve the operation stability and reliability of the chain.

 

Other material

Other materials, such as titanium, copper, aluminum, etc., are mostly not common in the use of the chain, often only used in special circumstances.
