1. Definition & Application

Agricultural chains are heavy-duty transmission and conveyor chains specially designed for farm machinery and agricultural handling systems. They transfer power and convey bulk materials such as grains, straw, silage, fertilizer and root crops. Typical equipment includes combine harvesters, balers, forage harvesters, grain elevators, potato harvesters and sugar cane harvesters.

2. Steel Detachable Chains Cast or stamped steel link chains, easy to assemble and disassemble without special tools. Common on old-style conveyors and farm elevators.
3. Pintle Chains Heavy open-barrel chains with pintle pins. Excellent resistance to dirt clogging. Mainly used for grain, corn and silage elevators.
4. Agricultural Engineering Chains / Heavy Duty Conveyor Chains Large pitch chains with attachments (cleats, flights, side brackets). For transporting root vegetables, sugar beets and straw.
5. Special Harvester Chains Custom chains with extended pins, scraper attachments or deep-hardened components for combine header, auger and thresher drives.

3. Core Material & Heat Treatment

• Chain Plates: 40Cr / 42CrMo alloy steel, punched and quenched & tempered to achieve high tensile strength and shock resistance.
• Pins & Bushes: Alloy steel with carburizing or induction hardening. Hardened surface reduces abrasion while the core remains tough to resist breaking under impact.
• Rollers: Carbon or alloy steel, surface hardened for wear protection against soil and crop debris.
• Surface Treatment: Shot blasting, anti-rust oil; some models adopt black oxide or galvanization for humid environments.

4. Key Technical Performance Requirements

1. Wear Resistance: Prevent rapid elongation caused by continuous friction and abrasive dust. Chain elongation is the primary failure mode in agricultural service.
2. Impact Fatigue Resistance: Withstand repeated shock loads from uneven feeding, sudden starts and crop blockages.
3. Corrosion Resistance: Resist moisture, fertilizer and mild chemical corrosion in field environments.
4. Low Clogging Design: Open structure for pintle and scraper chains to release mud, grains and plant fibers.
5. High Ultimate Tensile Strength: Ensure safety under heavy load operation.

5. Common Failures & Causes

• Chain Elongation: Pin and bush surface wear due to lack of lubrication, abrasive dust ingress.
• Link Plate Fracture: Overload, repeated impact, material defects or fatigue cracking.
• Roller / Bush Damage: Severe abrasion, foreign object jamming.
• Seizure: Mud and crop residue blockage plus insufficient lubrication.
• Attachment Breakage: Overloaded material conveying or improper installation.

6. Installation, Lubrication & Maintenance

1. Keep chain and sprocket aligned; avoid skew mounting which accelerates side wear.
2. Maintain proper chain tension. Too tight increases load; too loose leads to jumping and impact.
3. Lubricate regularly with heavy-duty chain oil. Clean mud and plant debris before lubrication.
4. Inspect elongation periodically. Replace chains when elongation exceeds the allowable limit.
5. Replace sprockets together with chains if sprocket teeth are heavily worn. Mismatched new chain and old sprocket will shorten service life sharply.

7. Selection Guidelines

• Confirm working type: power transmission or material conveying.
• Check working environment: dust, moisture, temperature, abrasive media.
• Calculate operating load, impact level and running speed.
• Select pitch, chain series and required attachments (cleats, extended pins, side tabs).
• Match corresponding sprockets with proper tooth profile for agricultural chains.
