A chain‑and‑sprocket system, also known as a chain drive, is a positive‑engagement mechanical power‑transmission assembly. It mainly consists of three core parts: driving sprocket, driven sprocket, and an endless loop chain.
Sprockets are toothed wheels with evenly‑distributed teeth. The chain is assembled by multiple hinged links (roller chain is the most widely‑used type). Different from belt drives that rely on friction, this system transfers motion and torque through precise meshing between sprocket teeth and chain rollers, with almost zero slip.
It is extensively applied in industrial conveyors, automation equipment, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural machinery and mining facilities, for power transmission or material‑handling conveyance between parallel shafts.
Important mechanical feature: Chordal Action (Polygonal Action). When the chain wraps around a sprocket, it forms a polygon instead of a perfect circle. It brings slight periodic fluctuation of chain linear velocity, vibration and dynamic load. The fewer teeth the driving sprocket has, the more obvious this effect will be.
